Mathematical Mindset

We are all about growing the mindset of our students, especially in the area of Maths as this
can be an area where we may put up perceived barriers.
At Balmoral, we want to create a Mathematical Mindset Community, where...
- Teachers and students believe everyone can learn maths at high levels
- Communication and connections are valued
- The maths is visual
- The maths is open
- The environment is filled with wonder and curiosity
- The classroom is a risk-taking, mistake valuing environment
We want to ask questions like...
Why does that answer make sense?
Why does that method work?
Can you prove it? Visually?
Can you predict what would happen if... ?
Did you make any interesting mistakes?
Please follow these links to help bring investigative, growth mindset building maths into your
home. The first video is especially valuable and explains this approach more fully (for adults).
The second video is aimed at students.
Both of these websites contain hundreds of investigations that can be levelled and sorted
by subject:
Lastly, this approach (sometimes called 'Common Core Maths') is explained by Dr Raj Shah
using a multiplication problem.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_CK1e0Lmxw
